Brazilian rapper Laiz arrived in Berlin in 2019 and quietly embedded herself in the city’s jazz underground, building a sound that folds hip-hop into afrobeat, jazz and the loose, radical spirit of tropicália. Her breakout record, Ela Partiu, released on Agogo Records, gathers more than 20 musicians from across the global south diaspora — from Brazil, Sudan and Ghana to Cuba, Colombia and South Africa — into a richly collaborative debut that feels both deeply Brazilian and unmistakably international.
